Defrauding (Al-Mutaffifîn)

In the name of Allah, Gracious, Merciful.

¹Woe to those that deal in fraud.

²Those who when they have to receive by measure from men exact full measure.

³But when they have to give by measure or weight to men, give less than due.

⁴Do they not think that they will be called to account?

⁵On a mighty day

⁶A day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?

⁷No, surely the record of the wicked is in Sijjin ¹

⁸And what will explain to you what Sijjin is?

⁹A register inscribed.

¹⁰Woe that day to those that deny;

¹¹Those that deny the day of judgment.

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim

¹Wailul lilmuthaf fifin

²Al lazina izaktalu alan nasi yastaufun

³Wa iza kaluhum auwazanuhum yukhsirun

⁴Ala yazhun nu ulaika annahum mabusun

⁵Liyaumin azhim

⁶Yauma yaqumun nasu lirabbil alamin

⁷Kalla inna kitabal fujari lafi sijjin

⁸Wa ma adraka ma sijjin

⁹Kitabum marqum

¹⁰Wailu yauma izil lilmukaz zibin

¹¹Allazina yukazibuna biyaumid

1. Sijjin is a register in which a record is kept for sinners, as is mentioned in verse 9.

I¹²And none can deny it but the transgressor beyond bounds, the sinner!

¹³When Our signs are rehearsed to him he says “Tales of the ancients!”

¹⁴By no means! but on their hearts is the stain of which they do!

¹⁵Verily, from their Lord that day will they be veiled.

¹⁶Further, they will enter the fire of hell.

¹⁷Further, it will be said to them: “This is that which you rejected as false!”

¹⁸No, verily, the record of the righteous is in Illiyin.²

¹⁹And what will explain to you what Illiyin is?

²⁰A register inscribed.

²¹To which bear witness those nearest.

²²Truly, the righteous will be in bliss:

²³On thrones will they command a sight:

¹²Wa ma yukazibu bihi illa kullu mutadin atsim

¹³Iza tut la alaihi ayatuna qala asathirul awalin

¹⁴Kalla bal rana ala qulubihim makanu yaksibun

¹⁵Kalla innahum arrabbihim yauma izil lamahjubun

¹⁶Summa innahum lashalul jahim

¹⁷Summa yuqalu hazal lazi kuntum bihi tukazibun

¹⁸Kalla inna kitabal abrari lafi illiyin

¹⁹Wa ma adraka ma illiyun

²⁰Kitabum marqum

²¹Yasyhaduhul muqarabun

²²Innal abrara lafi naim

²³Alal ara iki yanzhurun

2. If Sijjin is the register for the wicked, Illiyin is the register for the righteous.

²⁴You will recognize in their faces the beaming brightness of bliss.

²⁵Their thirst will be slaked with pure wine sealed:

²⁶The seal thereof will be musk: and for this let those aspire who have aspirations:

²⁷And with it will be a mixture of Tasnim:³

²⁸A spring from whereof drink those nearest to Allah.

²⁹Those in sin used to laugh at those who believed;

³⁰And whenever they passed by them used to wink at each other;

³¹And when they returned to their own people they would return jesting;

³²And whenever they saw them they would say “Behold! these are the people truly astray!”

³³But they had not been sent as keepers over them!

²⁴Tarifu fi wujuhihim nadhratan naim

²⁵Yusnauna rahiqim makhtum

²⁶Khitamuhu misk, wafi zalika falyatanafasil mutanafisun

²⁷Wa mizajuhu min tasnim

²⁸Ainayasyrabu bihal muqarabun

²⁹Innal lazina ajramu kanu minal lazina amanu yadhhakun

³⁰Wa iza marru bihim yataghamazun

³¹Wa izan qalabu ila ahlihimun qalabu fakihin

³²Wa iza ra auhum qalu innaha ulai ladhallun

³³Wa ma ursilu alaihim hafizhin

3. Tasnim is explained in verse 28 as a fountain for those nearest to Allah.

²⁴You will recognize in their

³⁴But on this day the believers will laugh at the unbelievers.

³⁵On thrones will they command.

³⁶Will not the unbelievers have been paid back for what they did?
