The Cloaked (Al-Muddaththir)

In the name of Allah, Gracious, Merciful.

¹O, you wrapped up!¹

²Arise and deliver your warning!

³And magnify your Lord!

⁴And your garments keep free from stain!²

⁵And all abomination shun!

⁶Nor expect in giving any increase for yourself!

⁷And be patient and constant for your Lord’s cause!

⁸Finally when the trumpet is sounded.

⁹That will be that day, a day of distress.

¹⁰Far from easy for those without faith.

¹¹Leave Me alone with those whom I created alone!

¹²To whom I granted resources in abundance.

¹³And sons to be by his side!

¹⁴To whom I made life smooth and comfortable!

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim

¹Ya ayuyuhal mud das sir

²Qum fa anzir

³Wa rabbaka fakabbir

⁴Wa siyabaka fatahir

⁵War rujza fahjur

⁶Wa la tamnun tastaksir

⁷Wa lirabbika fashbir

⁸Fa iza nuqira fin naqur

⁹Fazalika yauma izi yaumun

¹⁰Alal kafirina gairu yasir

¹¹Zarni wa man halaqtu wahida

¹²Wa jaaltu lahu malam mamduda

¹³Wa banina suhuda

¹⁴Wa ma hatu lahu tamhida

2. It is very interesting to note how Farid from the Ahmadiyyah movement gives his commentary. To him garment is not just garment but also, the followers of the prophet. That before he embarked on a mission Allah wanted him to prepare the hearts of his followers. He has completely deviated on the subject to bring in his own idiosyncratic views. The admonition is very clear to Muhammad, since sex makes one unclean and bodily fluids such as urine and sperm defiles a person, he was told to be ritually clean and to keep from unclean clothes. It may also include the keeping of himself from idolatry and all of its forms. The next verse deals probably with keeping his heart clean and to be an example (6-7) to the believers.

¹⁵Yet is he greedy that I should add yet more.

¹⁶By no means! For to Our signs he has been refractory!

¹⁷Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities!

¹⁸For he thought and he plotted.

¹⁹And woe to him! how he plotted!

²⁰Yea, woe to him! how he plotted!

²¹Then he looked round;

²²Then he frowned and he scowled;

²³Then he turned back and was haughty;

²⁴Then said he: “This is nothing but magic derived from of old;”

²⁵“This is nothing but the word of a mortal!”

²⁶Soon will I cast him into hell fire!

²⁷And what will explain to you what hell fire is?

²⁸Nothing is permitted to endure and nothing is left alone!

²⁹Darkening and changing the color of man!

³⁰Over it are nineteen.³

¹⁵Summa yatmau an azida

¹⁶Kalla innahu kana li ayatina anida

¹⁷Sa urhiquhu sauda

¹⁸Innahu fakara wa qadar

¹⁹Faqutila kaifa qadar

²⁰Summa qutila kaifa qadar

²¹Summa nazar

²²Summa abasa wa basar

²³Summa adbara wastakbar

²⁴Faqala in haza illa sihruy yusar

²⁵In haza illa qaulul basyar

²⁶Sa ushlihi saqar

²⁷Wa ma adraka ma saqar

²⁸La tubqi wa la tazar

²⁹La wahatul lilbasyar

³⁰Alaiha tisata asyar

3. Both George Sale and the Editors of the Noble Qur’an agree are angels. According to Islamic Numerologists, this is the miracle of the Qur’an, for which nobody can produce a surah the like of.

³¹And We have set none but angels as guardians of the fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for unbelievers in order that the people of the book may arrive at certainty and the believers may increase in faith and that no doubts may be left for the people of the book, and the believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say “What symbol does Allah intend by this?” Thus does Allah leave to stray whom He pleases and guides whom He pleases; and none can know the forces of the Lord except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind.

³²No, verily, by the moon.

³³And by the night as it retreats.

³⁴And by the dawn as it shines forth.

³⁵This is one of the mighty portents.

³⁶A warning to mankind

³¹Wa ma jaalna ashaban nari illa malaikata wa ma jaalna id datahum illa fitnatal lil lazina kafaru liyastaiqinal lazina utul kitaba wa yazdadal lazina amanu imana wa la yartabal lazina utul kitaba wal muminuna wa liyaqulal lazina fi qulubihim maraduw wal kafiruna maza aradal lahu bihaza masala kazalika yudhilul lahu ma yasyau wa yahdi ma yasya wa ma yalamu junuda rabbuka illa huwa ma hiya il lazikra lilbasyar

³²Kalla wal qamar

³³Wallaili iz adbar

³⁴Was subi iza asfar

³⁵Innaha la ihdal kubar

³⁶Naziral lilbasyar

³⁷To any of you that chooses to press forward or to follow behind.

³⁸Every soul will be in pledge for its deeds.

³⁹Except the companions of the right hand.

⁴⁰In gardens they will question each other

⁴¹And ask of the sinners:

⁴²“What led you into hell fire?”

⁴³They will say: “We were not of those who prayed;”

⁴⁴And we were not of those who fed the indigent;”

⁴⁵“But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers;”

⁴⁶“And we used to deny the day of judgment”

⁴⁷“Until there came to us the hour that is certain.”

⁴⁸Then will no intercession of any intercessors profit them.

⁴⁹Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?

³⁷Liman saa minkum ayataqad dama au yataakh khar

³⁸Kullu nafsin bima kasabat rahinah

³⁹Illa ashabal yamin

⁴⁰Fi jannatin yatasa alun

⁴¹Anil mujrimin

⁴²Ma salakakum fi saqar

⁴³Qalu lam naku minal musalin

⁴⁴Wa lam naku nutihumul miskin

⁴⁵Wa kunna nakudu maal kaidin

⁴⁶Wa kunna nukaz zibu bi yaumidin

⁴⁷Hata atanal yaqin

⁴⁸Fama tanfauhum safaatus safiin

⁴⁹Fama lahum anit tazkirati muridin

⁵⁰As if they were affrighted asses

⁵¹Fleeing from a lion!

⁵²Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls spread out!

⁵³By no means! But they fear not the hereafter

⁵⁴No, this surely is an admonition:

⁵⁵Let any who will keep it in remembrance!

⁵⁶But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of righteousness and the Lord of forgiveness.

⁵⁰Ka annahum humurum mustanfirah

⁵¹Farrat minqaswarah

⁵²Bal yuridu kullum ri in minhum ayuta suhufam munas sarah

⁵³Kalla balla yakhafunal akhirat

⁵⁴Kalla innahu tazkirat

⁵⁵Faman sa a zakarat

⁵⁶Wa ma yazkuruna illa ayasya allah huwa ahlut taqwa wa ahlul magfirah
