In the name of
Allah, Gracious, Merciful.
1O, you wrapped up!1
2Arise and deliver your warning!
3And magnify your Lord!
4And your garments keep free from stain!2
5And all abomination shun!
6Nor expect in giving any increase for yourself!
7And be patient and constant for your Lord’s cause!
8Finally when the trumpet is sounded.
9That will be that day, a day of distress.
10Far from easy for those without faith.
11Leave Me alone with those whom I created alone!
12To whom I granted resources in abundance.
13And sons to be by his side!
14To whom I made life smooth and comfortable! |

1. Please see note on
Sura 73:1.
2. It is very interesting to note how Farid
from the Ahmadiyyah movement gives his commentary. To him garment is not
just garment but also, the followers of the prophet. That before he embarked
on a mission Allah wanted him to prepare the hearts of his followers. He has
completely deviated on the subject to bring in his own idiosyncratic views.
The admonition is very clear to Muhammad, since sex makes one unclean and
bodily fluids such as urine and sperm defiles a person, he was told to be
ritually clean and to keep from unclean clothes. It may also include the
keeping of himself from idolatry and all of its forms. The next verse deals
probably with keeping his heart clean and to be an example (6-7) to the
believers. |

15Yet is he greedy that I should add yet more.
16By no means! For to Our signs he has been refractory!
17Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities!
18For he thought and he plotted.
19And woe to him! how he plotted!
20Yea, woe to him! how he plotted!
21Then he looked round;
22Then he frowned and he scowled;
23Then he turned back and was haughty;
24Then said he: “This is nothing but magic derived from of old;”
25“This is nothing but the word of a mortal!”
26Soon will I cast him into hell fire!
27And what will explain to you what hell fire is?
28Nothing is permitted to endure and nothing is left alone!
29Darkening and changing the color of man!
30Over it are nineteen.3 |

3. Both George Sale and the Editors of the
Noble Qur’an agree are angels. According to Islamic Numerologists, this is
the miracle of the Qur’an, for which nobody can produce a surah the like of. |
|
31And We have set none but angels as guardians of the fire; and
We have fixed their number only as a trial for unbelievers in order that the
people of the book may arrive at certainty and the believers may increase in
faith and that no doubts may be left for the people of the book, and the
believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers
may say “What symbol does Allah intend by this?” Thus does Allah leave to
stray whom He pleases and guides whom He pleases; and none can know the
forces of the Lord except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind.
32No, verily, by the moon.
33And by the night as it retreats.
34And by the dawn as it shines forth.
35This is one of the mighty portents.
36A warning to mankind |

37To any of you that chooses to press forward or to follow
behind.
38Every soul will be in pledge for its deeds.
39Except the companions of the right hand.
40In gardens they will question each other
41And ask of the sinners:
42“What led you into hell fire?”
43They will say: “We were not of those who prayed;”
44And we were not of those who fed the indigent;”
45“But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers;”
46“And we used to deny the day of judgment”
47“Until there came to us the hour that is certain.”
48Then will no intercession of any intercessors profit them.
49Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from
admonition? |

56But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He
is the Lord of righteousness and the Lord of forgiveness. |
