The Event (Al-Wâqi'ah)

In the name of Allah, Gracious, Merciful.

¹When the event inevitable comes to pass.

²Then will no soul entertain falsehood concerning its coming.

³Many will it bring low, many will it exalt.¹

⁴When the earth shall be shaken to its depths.

⁵And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms.

⁶Becoming dust scattered abroad

⁷And you shall be sorted out into three classes.

⁸Then the companions of the right hand, what will be the companions of the right hand?

⁹And the companions of the left hand, what will be the companions of the left hand?

¹⁰And those foremost will be foremost in the hereafter.

¹¹These will be those nearest to Allah.

¹²In gardens of bliss.

¹³A number of people from those of old.

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim

¹Iza waqaatil waqiah

²Laisa liwaqatiha kazibah

³Kafidatu rafiah

⁴Iza rujatil ardu raja

⁵Ya busatil jibalu basa

⁶Fakanat haba ammun basa

⁷Wa kuntum azwajan salasah

⁸Fa as habul maimanati ma as habul maimanah

⁹Wa as habul mas amati ma ashabul mas amah

¹⁰Wasabiqunas sabiqun

¹¹Ulaikal muqarabun

¹²Fi jannatin naim

¹³Sulatum minal aw walin

1. This is the Qur’anic version of many are called but few are chosen.

¹⁴And a few from those of later times.

¹⁵They will be on thrones encrusted.

¹⁶Reclining on them facing each other.

¹⁷Round about them will serve youths of perpetual freshness.

¹⁸With goblets shining beakers and cups filled out of clear flowing fountains:

¹⁹No after ache will they receive therefrom nor will they suffer intoxication:

²⁰And with fruits any that they may select;

²¹And the flesh of fowls any that they may desire.

²²And there are fair ones with big and lustrous eyes

²³Like unto pearls well guarded.

²⁴A reward for the deeds of their past.

²⁵No frivolity will they hear therein nor any taint of ill.

²⁶Only the saying “Peace! Peace.”

¹⁴Wa qalilum minal akhirin

¹⁵Ala sururim maudunah

¹⁶Mutaki inna aliha mutaqabilin

¹⁷Yatufu alihim wildanum

¹⁸Bi akwabi wa abariqi wa kasim mim main

¹⁹La yushadauna anha wala yunzifun

²⁰Wa fakihatim mim ma yatakha yarun

²¹Wa lahmi tairim mim ma yastahun

²²Wa hurun in

²³Ka amsalil lu lu ilmaknun

²⁴Jaza an bima kanu yamalun

²⁵La yasmauna fiha lagwa wa la tasima

²⁶Illa qilan salaman salaman

²⁷The companions of the right hand, what will be the companions of the right hand?

²⁸They will be among lote trees without thorns.

²⁹Among Talh trees with flowers piled one above another.

³⁰In shade long extended.

³¹By water flowing constantly.

³²And fruit in abundance.

³³Whose season is not limited nor forbidden.

³⁴And on thrones raised high.

³⁵We have created their companions of special creation.

³⁶And made them virgin pure.

³⁷Beloved by nature equal in age.

³⁸For the companions of the right hand.

³⁹A number from those of old.

⁴⁰And a number from those of later times.

⁴¹The companions of the left hand, what will be the companions of the left hand?

⁴²In the midst of a fierce blast of fire and in boiling water.

²⁷Wa ashabul yamini ma ashabul yamin

²⁸Fi sidrim makdud

²⁹Wa talhim mandud

³⁰Wa ma im maskub

³¹Wa ma im maskub

³²Wa fakihatin katsirah

³³La maqtuati wa la mamnuah

³⁴Wa furusim marfuah

³⁵Inna ansyanahun na insaa

³⁶Fajaalnahun na abkara

³⁷Uruban atraba

³⁸Li ashabil yamin

³⁹Sulatum minal awalin

⁴⁰Wa sulatum minal akhirin

⁴¹Wa ashabusi simali ma ashabus simal

⁴²Fi samumi wa hamim

⁴³And in the shades of black smoke:

⁴⁴Nothing to refresh nor to please:

⁴⁵For that they were known to be indulged before that in wealth.

⁴⁶And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme!

⁴⁷And they used to say “what! when we die and become dust and bones shall we then indeed be raised up again?

⁴⁸“We and our fathers of old?”

⁴⁹Say: “Yea, those of old and those of later times.

⁵⁰“All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a day well known.

⁵¹“Then will you truly, O you that go wrong and treat truth as falsehood!

52“You will surely taste of the tree of zaqqum.

⁵³“Then will you fill your insides therewith.

⁴³Wa zillim miyahmum

⁴⁴La baridi wa la karim

⁴⁵Innahum kanu qabla zalika mutrafin

⁴⁶Wa kanu yushiruna alal hinsil azhim

⁴⁷Wa kanu yaquluna a iza mitna wa kunna turaba wa izaman a inna lamabusun

⁴⁸Awa aba unal awalun

⁴⁹Qul innal awalina walakhirin

⁵⁰Lamajmuuna ila miqati yaumim malum

⁵¹Summa innakum ayuhad dalunal mukazibun

⁵²La akiluna minsajarim minzaqum

⁵³Famali una minhal buthun

⁵⁴“And drink boiling water on top of it:

⁵⁵“Indeed you shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!

⁵⁶Such will be their entertainment on the day of requital!

⁵⁷It is We who have created you: why will you not witness the truth?

⁵⁸Do you then see? What you throw out,

⁵⁹Is it you who create it or are We are the creators?

⁶⁰We have decreed death to be your common lot and We are not to be frustrated.

⁶¹From changing your forms and creating you in forms that you know not.

⁶²And you certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do you not celebrate His praises?

⁵⁴Fasyaribuna alaihi minal bamim

⁵⁵Fasyaribuna surbal him

⁵⁶Haza nuzuluhum yaumadin

⁵⁷Nahnu halaqnakum falau la tusad diqun

⁵⁸Afara aitum ma tumnun

⁵⁹A antum takhluqunahu am nahnul haliqun

⁶⁰Nahnu qad darna bainakumul mauta wa ma nahnu bimasbuqin

⁶¹Ala an nubadila am salakum wa nunsi akum fi ma la talamun

⁶²Wa laqad alimtumun nas atal ula falau la taza karun

⁶³Do you see the seed that you sow in the ground?

⁶⁴Is it you that cause it to grow or are We are the cause?

⁶⁵Were it Our will we could crumble it to dry powder and you would be left in wonderment.

⁶⁶“We are indeed left with debts:

⁶⁷“Indeed are we shut out.”

⁶⁸Do you see the water which you drink?

⁶⁹Do you bring it down from the cloud or We do?

⁷⁰Were it Our will We could make it salt: then why do you not give thanks?

⁷¹Do you see the fire which you kindle?

⁷²Is it you who grow the tree which feeds the fire or We do?

⁷³We have made it a memorial and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts.

⁶³Afara aitum ma tahrusun

⁶⁴A antum tasraunahu am nahnu zariun

⁶⁵Lau nasyau lajaalnahu hutaman fazhaltum tafak kahun

⁶⁶Inna lamughramun

⁶⁷Bal nahnu mahrumun

⁶⁸Afara aitumul ma al lazi tasrabun

⁶⁹A antum anzaltumuhu minal muzni am nahnul munzilun

⁷⁰Lau nasyau jaalnahu ujajan falau la taskurun

⁷¹Afara aitumun naral lati turun

⁷²A antum ansyatum syajarataha am nahnul munsi un

⁷³Nahnu jaalnaha tazkirataw wa ma taal lilmuqwin

⁷⁴Then celebrate with praises the name of the Lord, the supreme:

⁷⁵Furthermore, I call to witness the setting of the stars.

⁷⁶And that is indeed a mighty adjuration, if you but knew.

⁷⁷That this is indeed a Qur’an most honorable.

⁷⁸In a book well guarded

⁷⁹Which none shall touch but those who are clean:

⁸⁰A revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

⁸¹Is it such a message that you would hold in light esteem?

⁸²And have you made it your livelihood that you should declare it false?

⁸³Then why do you not intervene when the soul of the dying man reaches the throat.

⁸⁴And you the while sit looking on.

⁸⁵But We are nearer to him than you and yet see not.

⁷⁴Fasab bih bismi rabbikal azim

⁷⁵Fala uqsimu bimawaqiin nujum

⁷⁶Wa in nahu laqaamul lau talamuna azim

⁷⁷Innahu laquranun karim

⁷⁸Fi kitabim maknun

⁷⁹La yama suhu illal muta harun

⁸⁰Tanzilum mirabbil alamin

⁸¹Afabihazal hadisi antum mud hinun

⁸²Wa tajaluna rizqakum annakum tukazibun

⁸³Falau la iza balaghatil hulqum

⁸⁴Wa antum hina izin tanzhurun

⁸⁵Wa nahnu aqrabu ilaihi minkum wa lakilla tubsirun

⁸⁶Then why do you not if you are exempt from account.

⁸⁷Call back the soul if you are true?

⁸⁸Thus then if he be of those nearest to Allah.

⁸⁹Rest and satisfaction and a garden of delights.

⁹⁰And if he be of the companions of the right hand.

⁹¹“Peace be unto you” from the companions of the right hand.

⁹²And if he be of those who treat truth as falsehood who go wrong.

⁹³For him is entertainment with boiling water.

⁹⁴And burning in hell fire.

⁹⁵Verily, this is the very truth and certainty.

⁹⁶So celebrate with praises the name of your Lord, the supreme.

⁸⁶Falau la inkuntum gaira madinin

⁸⁷Tarjiunaha inkuntum sadiqin

⁸⁸Fa amma in kana minal muqar rabin

⁸⁹Farauhuw wa raihanuw wa janatu naim

⁹⁰Wa amma inkana minashabil yamin

⁹¹Fasalamul laka minashabil yamin

⁹²Wa amma inkana minal mukazibinad dallin

⁹³Fanuzulum minhamim

⁹⁴Wa tasliyatu jahim

⁹⁵Inna haza lahuwa haqqul yaqin

⁹⁶Fasab bih bismi rabbikal azim
