The Prophets (Al-Anbiyâ)
|
|
In the name of
Allah, Gracious, Merciful.
1Closer and closer to mankind comes their reckoning: yet they heed not and
they turn away.
2Never comes aught to them of a renewed message from their Lord but they
listen to it as in jest
3Their hearts toying as with trifles. The wrongdoers conceal their private
counsels saying “Is he more than a man like yourselves? Will you go to
witchcraft with your eyes
open?”1
4Say: “My Lord knows every word in the heavens and the earth: He is the
One that hears and knows all things.”

1. When Muhammad
claimed to be a prophet, he was not accepted by his people, several
assassination attempts were made on his life but somehow he was saved from
them all. Since he could not killed, they people wondered if he had
witchcraft, which justified their secret plots to kill him.

5“No,” they say “these are medleys of dreams! nay he forged it! nay he is
a poet! Let him then bring us a sign like the ones that were sent to those
of old!”
6As to those before them, not one of the populations which We destroyed
believed: will these believe?
7And before you also the apostles we sent were but men to whom We granted
inspiration: if you realize this not ask of those who possess the message.2
8And did We give them bodies that ate no food nor were they exempt from
death.
9In the end We fulfilled to them Our promise and We saved them and those
whom We pleased but We destroyed those who transgressed beyond bounds.
10We have revealed for you a book in which is a message for you: will you
not then understand?

2. Allah claims the
Superiority of the Bible and its people by making a point of reference and
verification for the Qur’anic revelation (“if ye realize this not ask of
those who possess the Message”), the people of the Book, the Jews and the
Christians.

11How many were the populations we utterly destroyed because of their
iniquities setting up in their places other peoples!
12Yet when they felt Our punishment, behold, they flee from it.
13Flee not but return to the good things of this life which were given you
and to your homes in order that you may be called to account.
14They said: “Ah! woe to us! We were indeed wrongdoers!”
15And that cry of theirs ceased not till We made them as a field that is
mown, as ashes silent and quenched.
16And not for sport did We create the heavens and the earth and all that
is between!
17If it had been Our wish to take a pastime, We should surely have taken
it from the things nearest to Us, if We would do that!

18No, We hurl the truth against falsehood and it knocks out its brain and
behold falsehood perishes! Ah! woe be to you for the things you ascribe.
19To Him belong all in the heavens and on earth: even those who are in His
presence are not too proud to serve Him, nor are they weary:
20They celebrate His praises night and day, nor do they ever flag or
intermit.
21Or have they taken gods from the earth who can raise the
dead?3
22If there were in the heavens and the earth other gods besides Allah
there would have been confusion in both! But glory to Allah, the Lord of the
throne: He is above what they attribute to Him!
23He cannot be questioned for His acts but they will be questioned for
theirs.

24Or have they taken for worship gods besides Him? Say “Bring your
convincing proof: this is the message of those with me and the message of
those before me.” But most of them know not the truth and so turn away.
25And not an apostle did We send before you without this inspiration sent
by Us to him: that there is no god but I; therefore worship and serve Me.
26And they say: “the most gracious has begotten offspring.” Glory to Him!
they are servants raised to honor.
27They speak not before He speaks and they act by His command.4
28He knows what is before them and what is behind them and they offer no
intercession except for those who are acceptable and they stand in awe and
reverence of Him.

4. There is the
clue to the Islamic teachings that prophets are sinless, if you ever needed
one. The argument is simple: prophets do not err in words or deeds because
they only follow what is revealed to them in speech and in deed. The
confusion therefore comes when Allah asks a prophet like Muhammad to confess
his sins: (Qur’an 40:55:
ask forgiveness for thy faults;
Qur’an 47:19: ask forgiveness for your sin;
48:2;
That Allah may forgive you your sins).
He admits to confessing his sins according to Fiqh-us-Sunnah 1.132a, reported by Abu Hurairah:
“When the Prophet, upon
whom be peace, made the opening takbir, he would be quiet for a little while
before his recitation. I asked him, ‘O Messenger of Allah, may my father and
mother be sacrificed for you, why are you quiet between the (opening) takbir
and your recitation? What do you say (at that time)?’ He said, ‘I say, O
Allah, make the distance between me and my sins as far as you have made the
distance between the East and the West. O Allah, cleanse me of my sins as a
white garment is cleansed of dirt. O Allah, purify me from my sins by snow,
rain and hail.”
|
|
 |
|
(Related by al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, an-Nasa’I and Ibn
Majah.)
Also Ali reported that when the Prophet stood for prayer, he would
make the takbir and then say, I have wronged my soul and You are aware of my
sins, so forgive all of my sins. No one forgives sins save You. Guide me to
the best character. No one can guide to the best of that save You. So, the
question is how fair is it for Allah to ask a prophet who only follows
Allah’s orders to confess his sins?
|
|
29And if any of them should say “I am a god besides Him” such a god We
should reward with hell: thus do We reward those who do wrong.
30Do not the unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined
together before We clove them asunder? We made from water every living
thing. Will they not then believe?5
31And We have set on the earth mountains standing firm lest it should
shake with them and We have made therein broad highways for them to pass
through: that they may receive guidance.
32And We have made the heavens as a well guarded canopy: Yet do they turn
away from the signs which these things point to!

5. With exception
of Adam and Eve, God created great whales, and every living creature that
moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and
every winged fowl after his kind, everything else was called into being by
God. It is like saying “kun fayaku_n(u)” Be and it is. Even so God “Let
there be and all things besides came into being. To say that every living
thing was made from water exposes Allah as an imposter god.

33And it is He who created the night and the day, and the sun and the
moon: all swim along each in its rounded course.
34And We granted not to any man before you permanent life: if then you
should die, would they live permanently?
35Every soul shall have a taste of death: and We test you by evil and by
good by way of trial: to Us must you return.6
36When the unbelievers see you, they treat you not except with ridicule.
“Is this the one who talks of your gods? And they blaspheme at the mention
of the most gracious!
37Man is a creature of haste: soon will I show you My signs: then you will

39If only the unbelievers knew when they will not be able to ward off the
fire from their faces nor yet from their backs and when no help can reach
them!
40Nay, it may come to them all of a sudden and confound them: no power
will they have then to avert it nor will they get respite.
41And mocked were apostles before you; but their scoffers were hemmed in

44No, We gave the good things of this life to these men and their fathers
until the period grew long
for them; see they not that we gradually reduce the land from its outlying
borders? Is it then they who will win?7
45Say “I do but warn you according to revelation”: but the deaf will not

7. “The gradual
reduction of land” has to do with the possession of the lands of the
unbelievers after they are defeated by the Muslims in wars and invasions. As
the Muslims became powerful, they took possession of lands that belonged to
the non-Muslims, a reserve case will be Israel’s possession of the Golan
Heights and the West Bank after gaining victory over Muslims.

47And We shall set up scales of justice for the day of judgment so that
not a soul will be dealt with unjustly in the least. And if there be the
weight of a mustard seed We will bring it to account: and enough are We to

48And in the past We granted to Moses and Aaron the criterion and a light
and a message for those who would do right
49Those who fear their Lord in their most secret thoughts and who hold the
hour in awe.
50And this is a blessed message which We have sent down: will you then

created them, and I am a witness to this.
57And by Allah I have a plan for your idols after you go away and turn

9. Abraham loved
life and would lie to save his neck than to boldly proclaim that he would
destroy the community gods, knowing that such a revelation if carried out
could spell his death. He lied to Abimelech (Genesis 20:1-11) for fear of
death about his relationship with Sarai because of how beautiful she was,.
He feared the people would kill him and take his wife, so he said that she
was his sister which was a half truth, and half truth is a lie.

61They said “Then bring him before the eyes of the people that they may
bear witness:”
62They said “Are you the one that did this with our gods, O Abraham?”
63He said: “Nay, this was done by this, their biggest one! Ask them if
they can speak intelligently!”
64So they turned to themselves and said “Surely you are the ones in the
wrong!”
65Then were they confounded with shame: they said “You know full well that
these do not speak!”

that lost most!
71And We delivered him and Lut to the land which We have blessed for the
nations.
72And We bestowed on him Isaac and as an additional gift, Jacob;10 and We
made righteous men of every one of them.11
73And We made them leaders guiding men by Our command and We sent them

10. In talking about the progeny of Abraham, the Qur’an always
leaves out the children of Keturah and Esau, Genesis 25:1-2 tells of the
children of Keturah, the wife that Abraham took after the death of Sarah:
Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah. She
bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
11. Genesis 25:25-29 reveals that Esau was the
senior brother of Jacob, although the Qur’an makes no mention of him:
The first came out red, all his body like a hairy
cloak, so they called his name Esau. Afterward his brother came out with his
hand holding Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty
years old when she bore them. When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful
hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents.
Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob. Once
when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was
exhausted.

76And Noah when he cried to Us before: We listened to his prayer and

people given to evil: so We drowned them all together.

12. Too many hands
spoil the soup, it is the case with the Qur’an, it was inspired by a group
of deities, hence the stories even within the Qur’an itself do not agree.
Here is a typical example.
the test of Solomon’s wisdom was that
the two
prostitutes who both had children; the one prostitute's child died while the other’s
lived. The one whose child died stole the live baby, which only the
ingenious wisdom of Solomon could detect (I kings 3:15-28).
David did no such
thing. The closest to this story is when the prophet Nathan came to David
and told him the story of the rich man who had many sheep, but went and took
the only sheep a poor man had to entertain his visitors (2 Samuel 12: 1-13).
The story told by Allah is not in agreement with the known historical record
of the lives of David and Solomon.
The identity of the
third man is not certain. The translators of the edition of the Qur’an
published as “The Bible Qur’an” says he is
Isaiah; Yusuf Ali thinks that he is Ezekiel. From George Sale, a host of
others are mentioned, including Elias, Joshua, Zechariah and a son of Job. In
any case, we cannot ascertain his true identity, therefore your guess may be
as good as mine.

And Job when he cried to his Lord “Truly distress has seized me but You are

Ourselves and a thing for commemoration for all who serve Us.

93But later generations cut off their affair one from another: yet will
they all return to Us.
94Whoever works any act of righteousness and has faith his endeavor will
not be rejected: We shall record it in his favor.
95And there is a ban on any population which We have destroyed: that they
shall not return.
96ntil the people of Gog and Magog are let through and they swiftly swarm
from every hill.

97Then will the true promise draw nigh: then behold! the eyes of the
unbelievers will fixedly stare in horror: “Ah! woe to us! we were indeed
heedless of this; nay, we truly did wrong!”
98Verily, you and the gods that you worship besides Allah are fuel for
hell! To it will you come!14
99If these had been gods, they would not have got there! But each one will
abide therein.
100There sobbing will be their lot nor will they there hear anything else.
101Those for whom the good from Us has gone before will be removed far
therefrom.
102Not the slightest sound will they hear of hell: what their souls
desired, in that will they dwell.

14. According to
the Muslims Christians worship Jesus and Mary as gods besides Allah,
according to this passage therefore, both Jesus and Mary and all those who
worship them will be fuel for the fire. And if Jesus and Mary cannot go to
Hell because of their piety, then Allah cannot be the One he claims to be,
he has not power to cast anyone into Hell.

103The great terror will bring them no grief: but the angels will meet
them: “This is your day that you were promised.”
104The day that we roll up the heavens like a scroll rolled up for books,
even as We produced the first creation, so We shall produce a new one: a
promise We have undertaken: truly shall We fulfill it.
105And before this We wrote in the Psalms after the message given to
Moses: My servants, the righteous shall inherit the earth.”
106Verily, in it is a Message for people who would worship Allah.
107And We sent you not but as a mercy for all creatures.
108Say: “What has come to me by inspiration is that your Allah is One
Allah: will you therefore bow to His Will?”

109But if they turn back say: “I have proclaimed the message to you all
alike and in truth; but I know not whether that which you are promised is
near or far.
110“It is He who knows what is open in speech and what you hide.
111“And I know not but that it may be a trial for you and a grant of
livelihood for a time.
112Say: “O my Lord! You judge in truth!” “Our Lord most gracious is the
One whose assistance should be sought against the blasphemies you utter!” |
