In the name of
Allah, Gracious, Merciful.
1A. L. R. These are the verses of the perspicuous book.
2We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an in order that you may learn wisdom.1
3 We relate unto you the most beautiful of stories in that We reveal to you
this Qur’an: before this you too were among those who knew it not.
4Behold Joseph said to his father, “O my father, I did see eleven stars
and the sun and the moon, I saw them prostrate themselves to me.”2

1Alif Lam Ra tilka ayatul kitabil mubini.
2Inna anzalunahu quranan arabiyyan laallakum taqiluuna.
3Nahnu naqussu alaika ahusanal qasuassi bima auhaina ilaika hazal qurana wa
inkunta min qabulihi laminal gafilina.
4Izu qala Yusufu li abihi ya abati inni raaitu ahadaashara kaukaba wa
shamusa wal qamara raaituhum li sajidina.

1. The Qur’an was revealed for the people of
Arabia, this verse and the following proves that. Qur’an 43:3 reads:
“We have made it a Qur’an in Arabic, that ye may be able to understand (and
learn wisdom)”
42:7 explains it
further that the Qur’an is revealed in Arabic so that Muhammad may warn
those of Mecca and those around her. Perhaps this explains why Islamic
worship, even today is only acceptable if it is in Arabic. Now, if the
Qur’an was revealed for the Arabians, should it be made universal, since
majority of the people of the world do not speak Arabic?
2. Were the people of Mecca, indeed Arabia
ignorant of the contents of the Bible and that they were hearing it for the
first time from Muhammad? I doubt that. The reason is that here is the story
of Joseph being told to

a people who are presumed
ignorant without any preliminaries as to who Joseph was, the name of his
father, etc., etc.
Read this same story from
Genesis and you will be convinced as to which people were ignorant of the
fact and needed details of the story. It certainly was not the people of
Arabia. Genesis 37:1‑11:
Jacob lived in the land of his father's sojournings,
in the land of Canaan. These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being
seventeen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers. He was a boy
with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought a
bad report of them to their father.
Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his
sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many
colors. But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all
his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him.
Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his
brothers they hated him even more. He said to them, "Hear this dream that I
have dreamed: Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my
sheaf arose and stood upright. And behold, your sheaves gathered around it
and bowed down to my sheaf."
His brothers said to him, "Are you indeed to reign
over us? Or are you indeed to rule over us?" So they hated him even more for
his dreams and for his words.
Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his
brothers and said, "Behold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun,
the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me."
But when he told it to his father and to his brothers,
his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have
dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow
ourselves to the ground before you?" And his brothers were jealous of him,
but his father kept the saying in mind.
Reading from the
Bible and then the Qur’an, one is bound to conclude that the people of
Arabia were very familiar with the story of Joseph, hence no details were
given there. On the other hand, the people to whom the Biblical account was
addressed, not being familiar with the story had to be told in detail. This
is proof positive that the Bible contains the truth while the Qur’an does
not.

5He said, “My little son, relate not your vision to your brothers lest they
concoct a plot against you, for Satan is to man an avowed enemy.”
6“And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of
stories and perfect His favor to you and to the posterity of Jacob even as
He perfected it to your fathers Abraham and Isaac before. For Allah is full
of knowledge and wisdom.”3
7Verily, in Joseph and his brethren are signs for seekers.
8They said, “Truly Joseph and his brother are loved more by our father
than we, but we are a goodly body. Really our father is obviously
wandering.”

5Qala ya bunayya la taqussussu ruyaka alla ikhuwatika fa yakidu laka
kaidan inna shaituana lil insani aduwwun mubinun.
6Wa kazalika yajutabika rabbuka wa yuallimuka min tawilil ahadisi wa
yutimmu niumatahu alaika wa alla ali Yaquba kama atammaha alla abawaika min
qabulu Ibrahima wa Ishaqa inna Ibrahima alimun hakimun.
7Laqadu kana fi Yusufu wa ikhuwatihi ayatun li sailina.
8Izu qalu laYusufu wa akhuhu ahabbu illa abina wa nahnu ussubatun inna
abana lafi dualalin mubinin.

3. According to the Biblical story, the conversation in verse 5 and 6
never took place.

9“Slay Joseph or cast him out to some land so that the favor of your
father may be given to you alone, for you to be righteous after that.”
10Said one of them, “Slay not Joseph but if you must do something, throw
him down to the bottom of the well, he will be picked up by some caravan of
travelers.”
11They said, “O our father, why do you not trust us with Joseph seeing we
are indeed his sincere well wishers?”
12“Send him with us tomorrow to enjoy himself and play and we shall take
every care of him.”
13He said, “Really it saddens me that you should take him away, I fear
lest the wolf should devour him while you attend not to him.”

9Uqutulu Yusufa awitturahuhu aruduan yakhulu lakum wajuhu abikum wa takunu
min badihi qauman sualihina.
10Qala qailun minuhum la taqutulu Yusufa wa aluquhu fi gayabatil jubi
yalutaqituhu baddu sayyarati inkuntum failina.
11Qalu ya abana ma laka la tamanna alla Yusufa wa inna lahu lanassihuna.
12Arusiluhu maana gadan yarutau wa yalabu wa inna lahu lahafittuna
13Qala inni layahuzununi an tazuhabu bihi wa akhafu anyakulahu zibu wa
antum anhu gafiluna.

14They said, “If the wolf were to devour him while we are a party then
should we indeed have perished ourselves.”
15So they took him away and they all agreed to throw him down to the
bottom of the well, and We put into his heart, “Of a surety you shall tell
them the truth of this their affair while they know not.”
16And they came to their father in the early part of the night weeping.
17They said, “Oh our father! we went racing with one another and left
Joseph with our things: and the wolf devoured him. But you will never
believe us even though we tell the truth.”

14Qalu lain akalahu zibu wa nahnu usubatun inna izalakhaasiruna.
15Falamma zahabu bihi wa ajumau anyyajaluhu fi gayabatil jubi wa auhaina
ilaihi latunabiannahum bi amurihim haza wa hum la yashuruna.
16Wa jau abahum ishaayyabukuna.
17Qalu ya abana inna zahabuna nasutabiqu wa tarakuna Yusufa inda mataina
fa akalahu zibu wa ma anta bimuminin lana wa lau kunna sadiqina.

18And they stained his shirt with false blood. He said, “No, but your
minds have made up a tale with you. Patience is most fitting, against that
which you assert, it is Allah whose help can be sought.”4
19And then there came a caravan of travelers, they sent their water
carrier and he let down his bucket. He said, “Ah there. Good news. Here is a
young man. So they concealed him as a treasure. But Allah knows well all
that they do.
20And they sold him for a miserable price for a few dirhams counted out,
in such low estimation did they hold him.5

18Wa jau alla qamissihi bi damin kazibin qala balu sawwalatu lakum
anfusukum amuran fa saburun jamilun wallahul musutaanu alla ma tasifuna.
19Wa jaatu sayaratun fa arusala waridahum fa adula daluwaha qala ya
bushura haza gulamun wa asaruhu biduatan wallahu alimum bima yamaluna.
20Wa sharauhu bi samanin bakhusin darahima madudatin wa kana fihi mina
zahidina

4. Who said that the Joseph should be slain, it
sounds as if one of them said it. The story is found in Genesis 37:12‑ 36:
Now his brothers went to pasture their father's flock
near Shechem. And Israel said to Joseph, "Are not your brothers pasturing
the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them." And he said to him,
"Here I am." So he said to him, "Go now, see if it is well with your
brothers and with the flock, and bring me word."
So he sent him from the Valley of Hebron, and he came
to Shechem. And a man found him wandering in the fields. And the man asked
him, "What are you seeking?" "I am seeking my brothers," he said. "Tell me,
please, where they are pasturing the flock." And the man said, "They have
gone away, for I heard them say, 'Let us go to Dothan.'" So Joseph went
after his brothers and found them at Dothan.

They saw him from afar, and before he came near to
them they conspired against him to kill him. They said to one another, "Here
comes this dreamer. Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the
pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will
see what will become of his dreams."
But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their
hands, saying, "Let us not take his life." And Reuben said to them, "Shed no
blood; cast him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand
on him"--that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his
father.
So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him
of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. And they took him and
cast him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it. Then they
sat down to eat. And looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming
from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to
carry it down to Egypt.
Then Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is it if
we kill our brother and conceal his blood? Come, let us sell him to the
Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our
own flesh." And his brothers listened to him.
Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph
up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty
shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt. When Reuben returned to the
pit and saw that Joseph was not in the pit, he tore his clothes and returned
to his brothers and said, "The boy is gone, and I, where shall I go?"
Then they took Joseph's robe and slaughtered a goat
and dipped the robe in the blood. And they sent the robe of many colors and
brought it to their father and said, "This we have found; please identify
whether it is your son's robe or not." And he identified it and said, "It is
my son's robe. A fierce animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt
torn to pieces."
Then Jacob tore his garments and put sackcloth on his
loins and mourned for his son many days. All his sons and all his daughters
rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted and said, "No, I
shall go down to Sheol to my son, mourning." Thus his father wept for him.
Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of
Pharaoh, the captain of the guard.
There is cohesiveness in the story told
in the Bible. The story in the Qur’an disagrees with the Biblical story in
more than one way.
a) The request in verse 11 never took place.
b)
contrary to verse 13, Jacob did not plant any ideas in their heads.
c)
Joseph did not go with his brothers, he was sent after them by his father as
read in verse 15.
d) Verse 16, they told their father a lie alright, but
they did not say that they went off racing one another, they took Joseph’s
coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; And
they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and
said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no. And
he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him;
Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.
e) Jacob did not suspect his
children nor did he think they were capable of such diabolical act against
one of their own.
5. Verses 19 and 20 contradict each other. Verse 19 says that he was
found by a water carrier of a caravan, verse 20 says that they (his)
brethren sold him. The Bible once again proves to be superior in knowledge
by given the entire treacherous plot of his brethren.

21And the man in Egypt who bought him said to his wife. “Make his stay
honorable, maybe he will bring us much good or we shall adopt him as a son.”
Thus did we establish Joseph in the land that We might teach him the
interpretation of stories. And Allah has full power and control over His
affairs, but most among mankind know it not.6
22And when he attained his full manhood We gave him power and knowledge,
thus do We reward those who do right.
23And she in whose house he was, sought to seduce him from his true self,
she fastened the doors and said, “Now come,” He said, “Allah forbid, truly
your husband is my lord. He made my sojourn agreeable. Truly to no good come
those who do wrong.”7
24And did she desire him and he would have desired her but that he saw the
evidence of his Lord, that We might turn away from him evil and shameful
deeds, for he was one of Our servants sincere and purified.8

21Wa qala lazi shyutarahu min missura li muraatihi akurimi masuwahu asa
anyanufaana au natakhizahu waladan wa kazalika makanna li Yusufa filardi wa
linuallimahu min tawilil ahadisi wallahu galibun alla amurihi wa lakinna
akusara nasi la yalamuna.
22Wa lamma balaga ashudahu atainahu hukuman wa iluman wa kazalika najuzil
muhusinina.
23Wa rawadathu lati huwa fi baitiha an nafusihi wa gallaqatil abuwaba wa
qalatu haita laka qala maazallahi innahu rabbi ahusana masuwaya innahu la
yufulihu tualimuna.
24Wa laqadu hamatu bihi wa hama biha lau la ar raa buruhana rabbihi
kazalika linasurifa anuhu sua wal fahushaa innahu min ibadinal mukhulasina.

6. This is how Joseph ended up in Egypt. His brothers sold him to a
caravan of Midianites from the descendants of Ishmael, they also sold him in
Egypt to Portiphar, an officer of Pharaoh. Joseph was in his care until his
wife attempted to seduce him, when she failed, she lied on Joseph which
landed him in jail.

verse 23. The story of the attempted rape by Potiphar’s wife is recorded in
Genesis 39:1‑20:
Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt, and
Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, had
bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there. The LORD was
with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his
Egyptian master. His master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD
caused all that he did to succeed in his hands.
So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him,
and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he
had. From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that
he had the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; the blessing
of the LORD was on all that he had, in house and field.

So he left all that he had in Joseph's charge, and
because of him he had no concern about anything but the food he ate.
Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. And
after a time his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, "Lie with
me." But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Behold, because of me my
master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything
that he has in my charge. He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has
he kept back anything from me except yourself, because you are his wife. How
then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?"
And as she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not
listen to her, to lie beside her or to be with her. But one day, when he
went into the house to do his work and none of the men of the house was
there in the house, she caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me."
But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out of the house.
And as soon as she saw that he had left his garment in
her hand and had fled out of the house, she called to the men of her
household and said to them, "See, he has brought among us a Hebrew to laugh
at us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.
And as soon as he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried out, he left his
garment beside me and fled and got out of the house."
Then she laid up his garment by her until his master
came home, and she told him the same story, saying, "The Hebrew servant,
whom you have brought among us, came in to me to laugh at me. But as soon as
I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment beside me and fled out
of the house."
As soon as his master heard the words that his wife
spoke to him, "This is the way your servant treated me," his anger was
kindled. And Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison, the place
where the king's prisoners were confined, and he was there in prison.

25And so they both raced each other to the door and she tore his shirt
from the back, they both found her lord near the door. She said, “What is
the punishment for one who formed an evil design against your wife but
prison or a grievous chastisement?”
26He said, “It was she that sought to seduce me from my true self.” And one
of her household saw and bore witness, “If it be that his shirt is rent from
the front, then is her tale true and he is a liar.”
27“And if it be that his shirt is torn from the back, then is she the liar
and he is telling the truth.”
28So when he saw his shirt that it was torn at the back, he said, “Behold,
it is a snare of you women, Truly mighty is your snare.

25Wa sutabaqal baba wa qadatu qamisahu min duburi wa alufaya sayidaha lada
l babi qalatu ma jazau man arada bi ahulika suan illaa anyusujana au azabun
alimun.
26Qala hiya rawadatuni an nafusi wa shahida shahidun min ahuliha in kana
qamissuha qudda min qubulin fa suadaqat wa huwa minal kazibina.
27Wa inkana qamissuhu qudda min duburin fa kazabatu wa huwa mina suadiqina.
28Falamma raa qamissahu qudda min duburin qala innahu min kaidikunna inna
kaidakunna attimun.

29“Joseph pass this over, ask forgiveness for your sin for truly you have
been at fault.”
30And the ladies said in the city, “The wife of the Aziz is seeking to
seduce her slave from his true self, truly has he inspired her with violent
love, we see she is evidently going astray.”
31When she heard of their malicious talk, she sent for them and prepared a
banquet for them, she gave each of them a knife; and she said, “Come out
before them.” When they saw him they extolled him and cut their hands. They
said, “Allah preserve us, this is no mortal. This is none other than a noble
angel.”

29Yusufu ariddu an haza wa sutagufiri lizamubiki innaki kunti minal
khatiina.
30Wa qala nisuwatun fil madinati muraatul Azizi turawidu fataha an
nafusihi qadu shagafaha hubban inna lanaraha fi dualalin mubinin.
31Falamma samiatu bi makurihinna arusalatu ilaihinna wa atadatu lahunna
mutakaan wa atatu kulla wahidatin minhunna sikkinan wa qaatu ikhuruju
alaihinna falamma raainahu akubarunahu wa qatana aidiyahunna wa quluna hasha
lillahi ma haza basharan in haza illa malakun karimun.

32She said, “There before you is the man about whom you blamed me. I did
seek to seduce him from his true self, but he firmly saved himself
guiltless. And now if he does not my bidding, he shall certainly be cast
into prison and be in the company of the vilest.”
33He said, “O my Lord, the prison is more to my liking than that to which
they invite me, unless you turn away their snare from me I should feel
inclined towards them and join the ranks of the ignorant.”
34So his Lord heard him and turned away from him their snare, verily, He
hears and knows all things.
35Then it occurred to the men after they had seen the signs to imprison
him for a time.9

32Qalatu fazalikunna lazi lumutunnani fihi wa laqadu rawatuhu an nafusihi
fa sutasama wa lail lam yafal ma amuruhu layusujananna wa layakunan mina
suagirina.
33Qala rabbi sijunu ahabu ilayya mimma yadunani ilaihi wa illa tasurifu
anni kaidahunna asubu ilaihinna wa akum minal jahilina.
34Fa sutajaba lahu rabbuhu fasarafa anuhu kaidahunna innahu huwa samiul
alimu.
35Summa bada lahum min badi ma raawul ayati layasujununnahu hata hinin.

9. According to the Bible when Portiphar heard his wife’s allegation,
he believed her and on the strength of that he imprisoned Joseph. Again the
Qur’an fabricates a story in that event.

36And now with him there came into the prison two young men. Said one of
them, “I see myself pressing wine.” Said the other, “I see myself carrying
bread on my head and birds are eating thereof.” “Tell us the truth and
meaning thereof, for we see you are one that does good.”10
37He said, “Before any food comes to feed either of you, I will surely
reveal to you the truth and meaning of this before it comes to pass, that is
part of that which my Lord has taught me. I have abandoned the ways of a
people that believe not in Allah and that deny the hereafter.”

36Wa dakhala maahu sijuna fatayani qala ahaduhuma inni arani asiru
khamuran wa qalal akharu inni arani ahumilu fauqa rasi khubuzan takulut
tairu minhu nabbina bitawilihi inna naraka minal muhusinina.
37Qala la yatiyukuma taamun turuzaqanihi illa nabbatukuma bi tawilihi
qabula anyatiyakuma zalikuma mimma allamani rabbi inni tarakutu millata
qaumi la yuminuna billahi wa hum bilakhirati hum kafiruna.

10. The two officers of Pharaoh were in jail before Joseph got there,
contrary to what the Qur’an says. Genesis 40:1‑23 gives more insight into
the matter:
Some time after this, the cupbearer of the king of
Egypt and his baker committed an offense against their lord the king of
Egypt. And Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and
the chief baker, and he put them in custody in the house of the captain of
the guard, in the prison where Joseph was confined.
The captain of the guard appointed Joseph to be with
them, and he attended them. They continued for some time in custody.
And one night they both dreamed--the cupbearer and the
baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison--each his own
dream, and each dream with its own interpretation.

When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that
they were troubled. So he asked Pharaoh's officers who were with him in
custody in his master's house, "Why are your faces downcast today?"
They said to him, "We have had dreams, and there is no
one to interpret them." And Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations
belong to God? Please tell them to me."
So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph and
said to him, "In my dream there was a vine before me, and on the vine there
were three branches. As soon as it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and the
clusters ripened into grapes. Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the
grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup and placed the cup in Pharaoh's
hand."
Then Joseph said to him, "This is its interpretation:
the three branches are three days. In three days Pharaoh will lift up your
head and restore you to your office, and you shall place Pharaoh's cup in
his hand as formerly, when you were his cupbearer. Only remember me, when it
is well with you, and please do me the kindness to mention me to Pharaoh,
and so get me out of this house. For I was indeed stolen out of the land of
the Hebrews, and here also I have done nothing that they should put me into
the pit."
When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was
favorable, he said to Joseph, "I also had a dream: there were three cake
baskets on my head, and in the uppermost basket there were all sorts of
baked food for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating it out of the basket on my
head."
And Joseph answered and said, "This is its
interpretation: the three baskets are three days. In three days Pharaoh will
lift up your head--from you!--and hang you on a tree. And the birds will eat
the flesh from you."
On the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, he
made a feast for all his servants and lifted up the head of the chief
cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants. He restored
the chief cupbearer to his position, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh's
hand. But he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them. Yet
the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

38“And I follow the ways of my fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and
never could we attribute any partners whatever to Allah, that is of the
grace of Allah to us and to mankind, yet most men are not grateful.
39“O my two companions of the prison! are many lords differing among
themselves better or Allah the one supreme and irresistible?”
40“If not Him you worship nothing but names which you have named, you and
your fathers for which Allah has sent you no authority, the command is for
none but Allah, He has commanded that you worship none but Him, that is the
right religion but most men understand not.”

38Wa tabatu millata abai Ibrahima wa Ishaqa wa Yaquba ma kana lana an
nushurika billahi min shaiin zalika min fadulillahi alaina wa alla nasi wa
lakinna akusaran nasi la yashukuruna.
39Ya sahibayi sijuni aarubabun mutafarriquna khairun amillahu l wahidu l
qahharu.
40Ma taubuduna min dunihi illa asumaan sammaitumuha anutum wa abaukum ma
anuzalallahu biha min sultanin inil hukumu illa lillahi amara alla tabudu
illa iyyahu zalika dinul qayyimu wa lakinna akusaran nasi la yalamuna.

41“O my two companions of the prison! as to one of you he will pour out
the wine for his lord to drink, as for the other he will hang from the cross
and the birds will eat from off his head. This has been decreed, that matter
whereof you two enquire.”
42And of the two to that one whom he considered about to be saved he said,
“Mention me to your lord.” But Satan made him forget to mention him to his
lord, and he lingered in prison a few years.
43And the king said, “I see seven fat kine whom seven lean ones devour,
and seven green ears of corn and seven withered. O chiefs, expound to me my
vision if it be that you can interpret visions.”

44They said, “A confused medley of dreams, and we are not skilled in the
interpretation of dreams.”
45And the man who had been released one of the two and who now remembered
him after a space of time said, “I will tell you the truth of its
interpretation, send me.”
46“Joseph, man of truth, expound to us the dream of seven fat kine whom
seven lean ones devour, and of seven green ears of corn and others withered,
that I may return to the people and that they may understand.”
47He said, “For seven years shall you diligently sow as you
should, and the harvests that you reap you shall leave them in the ear
except a little of which you shall eat.”

48“Then will come after that seven dreadful years which will devour what
you shall have laid by in advance for them except a little which you shall
have guarded.”
49“Then will come after that a year in which the people will have abundant
water and in which they will press wine and oil.”
50And so the king said, “Bring him to me.” But when the messenger came to
him Joseph said, “Go back to your lord and ask him what is the state of mind
of the ladies who cut their hands?” For my Lord is certainly well aware of
their snare.

51He said, “What was your affair when you sought to seduce Joseph from his
true self?” The ladies said, “Allah preserve us! no evil know we against
him.” The Aziz’s wife said, “Now is the truth manifest, it was I who sought
to seduce him from his true self, he is indeed of those who are true.
52“This is in order that he may know that I have never been false to him
in his absence, and that Allah will never guide the snare of the false
ones.”
53“And I do not absolve my own self, that is certainly prone to evil
unless my Lord bestow His mercy, but surely certainly my Lord is most
forgiving, most merciful.”
54And so the king said, “Bring him to me, I will take him specially to
serve about my own person.” Therefore when he had spoken to him he said, “Be
assured, this day you are before our own presence with rank firmly
established and fidelity fully proved.”
55He said, “Set me over the storehouses of the land, I will indeed guard
them as one that knows.”11

51Qala ma khatubukunna izu rawatunna Yusufa an nafusihi quluna hasha
lillahi ma alimuna alaihi min suin qalati imuraatul azizil ana hashasal
haqqu ana rawatuhu an nafusihi wa innahu lamina suadiqina.

verse 55. The Qur’anic account is obviously very off. According to Genesis 41:25‑43:
Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, "The dreams of Pharaoh
are one; God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do. The seven good
cows are seven years, and the seven good ears are seven years; the dreams
are one.
The seven lean and ugly cows that came up after them
are seven years, and the seven empty ears blighted by the east wind are also
seven years of famine. It is as I told Pharaoh; God has shown to Pharaoh
what he is about to do. There will come seven years of great plenty
throughout all the land of Egypt, but after them there will arise seven
years of famine, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt.
The famine will consume the land, and the plenty will
be unknown in the land by reason of the famine that will follow, for it will
be very severe. And the doubling of Pharaoh's dream means that the thing is
fixed by God, and God will shortly bring it about. Now therefore let Pharaoh
select a discerning and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt. Let
Pharaoh proceed to appoint overseers over the land and take one-fifth of the
produce of the land of Egypt during the seven

plentiful years. And let them gather all the food of
these good years that are coming and store up grain under the authority of
Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it. That food shall be a
reserve for the land against the seven years of famine that are to occur in
the land of Egypt, so that the land may not perish through the famine."
This proposal pleased Pharaoh and all his servants.
And Pharaoh said to his servants, "Can we find a man like this, in whom is
the Spirit of God?" Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has shown you
all this, there is none so discerning and wise as you are. You shall be over
my house, and all my people shall order themselves as you command. Only as
regards the throne will I be greater than you."
And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "See, I have set you over
all the land of Egypt." Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his hand and
put it on Joseph's hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a
gold chain about his neck. And he made him ride in his second chariot. And
they called out before him, "Bow the knee!" Thus he set him over all the
land of Egypt.

56And thus did We give established power to Joseph in the land to take
possession therein as when or where he pleased. We bestow of Our mercy on
whom We please and We suffer not to be lost the reward of those who do good.
57And verily, the reward of the hereafter is the best for those who
believe and are constant in righteousness.
58And then came Joseph’s brethren, they entered his presence and he knew
them but they knew him not.
59And when he had furnished them forth with provisions for them he said,
“Bring unto me a brother you have of the same father as yourselves, see not
that I pay out full measure and that I do provide the best
hospitality?”12
60“Now if you bring him not to me you shall have no measure from me nor
shall be you come near me.”

12. A comparative look at this verse and Genesis 42:13‑16 reveals a
different story:
And they said, "We, your servants, are twelve
brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan, and behold, the
youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more." But Joseph said
to them, "It is as I said to you. You are spies. By this you shall be
tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your
youngest brother comes here. Send one of you, and let him bring your
brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether
there is truth in you. Or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are
spies."
It was the brethren
who spoke of their younger brother to Joseph after they were accused of
being spies. It was their way of trying to show how honest they were,
unfortunately for them, it was Joseph they were lying to.

father: indeed we shall do it.”
62And he told his servants to put their stock in trade into their
saddlebags so they should know it, only when they returned to their people,
in order that they might come back.
63Now when they returned to their father they said, “O our father, no more
measure of grain shall we get, so send our brother with us that we may get
our measure, and we will indeed take every care of him.”

64He said, “Shall I trust you with him with any result other than when I
trusted you with his brother before? But Allah is the best to take care of
him and He is the most merciful of those who show mercy.”
65And then when they opened their baggage they found their stock in trade
had been returned to them. They said, “O our father, what can we desire? Our
stock in trade has been returned to us, so we shall get food for our family,
we shall take care of our brother, and add a full camel’s load, this is a
small quantity.”
66Jacob said, “Never will I send him with you until you swear a solemn
oath to me in Allah’s name that you will be sure to bring him back to me,
unless you are yourselves hemmed in.” And when they had sworn their solemn
oath he said, “Over all that we say, be Allah the witness and guardian.”

64Qala halu amanukum alaihi illa kama aminutukum alla akhihi min qabulu
fallahu khairun hafiza wa huwa aruhamu rahimina.
65Wa lamma fatahu mataahum wajadu biduaatahum rudatu ilaihim qalu ya abana
ma nabugi hazihi biduaatuna rudatu ilaina wa namiru ahulana wa nahufazu
akhana wa nazudadu kaila bairin zalika kailun yasirun.
66Qala lan urusilahu maakum hata tutani mausiqan minallahi latatunnani

67And further he said, “O my sons! enter not all by one gate, enter by different
gates. Not that I can profit you anything against Allah, none can command
except Allah, on Him do I put my trust and let all that trust put their
trust on Him.”
68And when they entered in the manner their father had enjoined, it did
not profit them in the least against Allah, it was but a necessity of
Jacob’s soul which he discharged. For he was by Our instruction full of
knowledge but most men know not.13
69And now when they came into Joseph’s presence he received his brother to
stay with him. He said, “Behold, I am your brother, so grieve not at any of
their doings.”

67Wa qala ya baniyya la tadukhulu min babi wahidi wa dukhulu min abuwabin
mutafarriqatin wa ma uguni anukum minallahi min shaiin inil hukumu illa

13. The account
from verse 60‑68 is in contradiction with the story in Genesis 42:17‑38:
And he put them all together in custody for three
days. On the third day Joseph said to them, "Do this and you will live, for
I fear God: if you are honest men, let one of your brothers remain confined
where you are in custody, and let the rest go and carry grain for the famine
of your households, and bring your youngest brother to me. So your words
will be verified, and you shall not die."
And they did so. Then they said to one another, "In
truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of
his soul, when he begged us and we did not listen. That is why this distress
has come upon us."
And Reuben answered them, "Did I not tell you not to
sin against the boy? But you did not listen. So now there comes a reckoning
for his blood." They did not know that Joseph understood them, for there was
an interpreter between them.

Then he turned away from them and wept. And he
returned to them and spoke to them. And he took Simeon from them and bound him before
their eyes. And Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, and to
replace every man's money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the
journey. This was done for them.
Then they loaded their donkeys with their grain and
departed. And as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at
the lodging place, he saw his money in the mouth of his sack.
He said to his brothers, "My money has been put back;
here it is in the mouth of my sack!" At this their hearts failed them, and
they turned trembling to one another, saying, "What is this that God has
done to us?"
When they came to Jacob their father in the land of
Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying, "The man, the
lord of the land, spoke roughly to us and took us to be spies of the land.
But we said to him, 'We are honest men; we have never been spies. We are
twelve brothers, sons of our father. One is no more, and the youngest is
this day with our father in the land of Canaan.'
Then the man, the lord of the land, said to us, 'By
this I shall know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with
me, and take grain for the famine of your households, and go your way. Bring
your youngest brother to me. Then I shall know that you are not spies but
honest men, and I will deliver your brother to you, and you shall trade in
the land.'"
As they emptied their sacks, behold, every man's
bundle of money was in his sack. And when they and their father saw their
bundles of money, they were afraid. And Jacob their father said to them,
"You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no
more, and now you would take Benjamin. All this has come against me."
Then Reuben said to his father, "Kill my two sons if I
do not bring him back to you. Put him in my hands, and I will bring him back
to you." But he said, "My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is
dead, and he is the only one left. If harm should happen to him on the
journey that you are to make, you would bring down my gray hairs with sorrow
to Sheol."

furnished them forth with provisions for them he put the drinking cup into
his brother’s saddlebag. Then shouted out a crier, “You in the caravan,
behold, you are thieves without doubt.”
71They said turning towards them, “What is it that you miss?”.
72They said, “We miss the great beaker of the king, for him who produces
it is a camel load, I will be bound by it.”.
73They said, “By Allah, you know well that we came not to make mischief in
the land and we are no thieves.”.
74They said, “What then shall be the penalty of this if you are to have
lied?”.
75They said, “The penalty should be that he in whose saddle bag it is
found should be held to atone for the crime. Thus it is we punish the
wrongdoers.”

76So he began with their baggage, before the baggage of his brother, at
length He brought it out of his brother’s baggage. Thus did We plan for
Joseph. He could not take his brother by the law of the king except that
Allah willed it. We raise to degrees whom We please, but over all endued
with knowledge is one, the all knowing.
77They said, “If he steals there was a brother of his who did steal
before.” But these things did Joseph keep locked in his heart revealing not
the secrets to them. He said “You are the worse situated, and Allah knows
best the truth of what you assert.”14
78They said, “O exalted one, behold, he has a father aged and venerable,
so take one of us in his place, for we see that you are in doing good.”

76Fabadaa bi auiyatihim qabula wiai akhihi summa sutakhurajaha min wiai
akhihi kazalika kiduna liYusufa ma kana liyakhuza akhahu fi dinil maliki

14. Verse 69
contradicts verse 77. In verse 69 Joseph told them that Benjamin was his
brother, however in verse 77 we read that Joseph kept his knowledge a
secret. The whole conversation is not in agreement with the historical fact
as recorded in Genesis 43:20‑34:
... "Oh, my lord, we came down the first time to buy
food. And when we came to the lodging place we opened our sacks, and there
was each man's money in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. So
we have brought it again with us, and we have brought other money down with
us to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks."
He replied, "Peace to you, do not be afraid. Your God
and the God of your father has put treasure in your sacks for you. I
received your money." Then he brought Simeon out to them. And when the man
had brought the men into Joseph's house and given them water, and they had
washed their feet, and when he had given their donkeys fodder, they prepared
the present for Joseph's coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat
bread there.

When Joseph came home, they brought into the house to
him the present that they had with them and bowed down to him to the ground.
And he inquired about their welfare and said, "Is your father well, the old
man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?"
They said, "Your servant our father is well; he is
still alive." And they bowed their heads and prostrated themselves. And he
lifted up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said,
"Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me? God be gracious to
you, my son!"
Then Joseph hurried out, for his compassion grew warm
for his brother, and he sought a place to weep. And he entered his chamber
and wept there. Then he washed his face and came out. And controlling
himself he said, "Serve the food."
They served him by himself, and them by themselves,
and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians
could not eat with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.
And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the
youngest according to his youth. And the men looked at one another in
amazement. Portions were taken to them from Joseph's table, but Benjamin's
portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank and were
merry with him.

79He said, “Allah forbid that we take other than him with whom we found
our property, indeed we should be acting wrongfully.”
80Now when they saw no hope of his, they held a conference in private. The
leader among them said, “Do you not know that your father took an oath from
you in Allah’s name and how before this you failed in your duty with Joseph?
Therefore will I not leave this land until my father permits me or Allah
commands me, and He is the best to command.
81“Turn back to your father and say ‘O our father, behold, your son stole,
we bear witness only to what we know and we could not well guard against the
unseen’”

79Qala maazallahi an nakhuza illa man wajaduna mataana indahu inna iza
latualimuna.
80Falamma sutaiasu minhu khalasu najiyyan qala kabiruhum alam talamu anna
abakum qadu akhaza alaikum mausiqan minallahi wa min qabulu ma farratum fi
Yusufa falan aburaha l ardda hata yazana li abi au yahkumallahu li wa huwa

81Irujiu illa abikum fa qulu ya abana inna bunaka saraqa wa ma shahiduna

82“And ask at the town where we have been and the caravan in which we
returned and we are indeed telling the truth.”.
83Jacob said, “No, but you have yourselves contrived a story for you. So
patience is most fitting. Maybe Allah will bring them all to me, for He is
indeed full of knowledge and wisdom.”
84And he turned away from them and said, “How great is my grief for
Joseph.” And his eyes became white with sorrow and he fell into silent
melancholy.
85They said, “By Allah, will you not cease to remember Joseph until you
reach the last extremity of illness or until you die.”
86He said, “I only complain of my distraction and anguish to Allah and I
know from Allah that which you know not.

up hope of Allah’s soothing mercy, truly no one despairs of Allah’s soothing
mercy except those who have no faith.”.
88Then when they came into his presence, they said, “O exalted one,
distress has seized us and our family, we have brought but scanty capital,
so pay us full measure and treat it as charity to us, for Allah does reward
the charitable.”
89He said, “Do you know how you dealt with Joseph and his brother not
knowing?”.

certainly have been guilty of sin.”
92He said, “This day let no reproach be on you, Allah will forgive you and
He is the most merciful of those who show mercy?”.
93Go with this my shirt and cast it over the face of my father, he will
come to see. Then come to me together with all your family.”
94And when the caravan left their father said, “I do indeed scent the
presence of Joseph, no, think me not a dotard.”
95They said, “By Allah, truly you are in your old wandering mind.”

96Then when the bearer of the good news came, he cast over his face and he
forthwith regained clear sight. He said, “Did I not say to you ‘I know from
Allah that which you know not?’”
97They said, “O our father, ask for us forgiveness for our sins for we
were truly at fault.”
98He said, “Soon will I ask my Lord for forgiveness for you, “or He is
indeed most forgiving, merciful.”
99Then when they entered the presence of Joseph he provided a home for his
parents with himself and said, “Enter Egypt in safety if it please Allah.”

96Falamma an jaal bashiru aluqahu alla wajuhihi fa rutada basiran qala
alam aqul lakum inni alamu minallahi ma la talamuna.

100And he raised his parents high on the throne and they fell down in
prostration before him. He said, “O my father, this is the fulfillment of my
vision of old. Allah has made it come true, He was indeed good to me when He
took me out of prison and brought you out of the desert, after Satan had
sown enmity between me and my brothers. Verily, my Lord understands best the
mysteries of all that He plans to do: for verily, He is full of knowledge
and wisdom.”
101“O my Lord, you have indeed bestowed on me some power and taught me
something of the interpretation of dreams and events. O creator of the
heavens and the earth. You are my protector in this world and in the
hereafter, take my soul as one submitting to your will and unite me with the
righteous.”
102Such is one of the stories of what happened unseen which We reveal by
inspiration unto you. You were not with them when they concerted their plans
together in the process of weaving their plots.

100Wa rafaa abawaihi alal arushi wa kharru lahu sujjadan wa qala ya abati
haza tawilu ruyayamin qabulu qadu jaalaha rabbi haqqan wa qadu ahusana bi
izu akhurajani mina sijuni wa jaa bikum minal baduwi min badi an nazaga
shaituanu baini wa baina ikhuwati inna rabbi lattifun lima yashau innahu
huwal alimul hakimu.
101Rabbi qadu ataitani minal mulki wa allamutani min tawilil ahadisi
fatira samawati walarddi anta waliyyi fi dunya walakhirahti tawaffani
musulima wa aluhiquni bi salihina.
102Zalika min amubail gaibi nuhihi ilaika wa ma kunta ladaihim izu ajumau
amurahum wa hum yamukuruna.

103And yet no faith will the greater part of mankind have, however
ardently you desire it.
104And no reward do you ask of them for this, it is no less than a message
for all creatures.
105And how many signs in the heavens and the earth do they pass by? Yet
they turn away from them.
106And most of them believe not in Allah without associating others with
Him.
107Do they then feel secure from the coming against them of the covering
veil of the wrath of Allah, or of the coming against them of the hour, all
of a sudden while they perceive not?
108Say, “This my way, I invite unto Allah an evidence clear as the seeing
with one’s eyes, I and whoever follows me, Glory to Allah, and never will I
join gods with Allah.”

103Wa ma akusaru nasi wa lau harasuta bi muminina.
104Wa ma tasaluhum alaihi min ajurin in huwa illa zikurul lil alamina.
105Wa kaayyinu min ayatin fi samawati walarddi yamurruna alaiha wa hum
anha muridduna.
106Wa ma yuminu akusaruhum billahi illa wa hum mushrikuna.
107Afaaminu an tatiyahum gashiyatun min azabillahi au tatiyahumu saatu
bagutatan wa hum la yashuruna.
108Qulu hazihi sabiuli adu ilallahi alla basiratin ana wa man itabaani wa
subhanallahi wa ma ana minal mushrikina.

109Nor did We send before you any but men whom We inspired, living in
human habitations. Do they not travel through the earth and see what was the
end of those before them? But the home of the hereafter is best for those
who do right. Will you not then understand?
110Until when the apostles give up hope and think that they were treated
as liars, there reaches them Our help. And those whom We will are delivered
into safety. But never will be warded off Our punishment from those who are
in sin.

109Wa ma arusalna min qabulika illa rijalan nuhi ilaihim min ahulil qura
afalam yasiru filarddi fayantturu kaifa kana aqibatul lazina min qabulihim
wa ladaru lakhirati khairul lil lazina taqau afala taqiluna.
110Hata iza sutaiasa rusulu wa tuannu annahum qadu kuzibu jaahum nasuruna
fanujjiya man nashau wa la yuradu basuna anil qaumil mujurimina.

111There is in their stories instruction for men endued with
understanding. It is not a tale invented but a confirmation of what went
before it, a detailed exposition of all things and a guide and a mercy to
any such as believe.

111Laqadu kana fi qasuassihim iburatun liulil alubabi ma kana hadisa
yufutara wa lakin tasudiqal lazi baina yadaihi wa tafusila kulli shaiin wa
Hudan warahumatan liqaumi yuminuna
